Attendance & absences

Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

  • has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
  • is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
  • is sick, or has an infectious illness.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days.

School Absences at Castle Cove

Parents are requested to keep their children at home when they are sick. If a child becomes ill at school, the parents will be contacted immediately to come and take the child home.

 Short Absences:

You may phone the school office to advise them if your child/ren will be absent from school. They will then advise the class teacher. You are required to send an explanatory note with your child when he/she returns to school.

 Long Absences:

Parents should notify the school if their child will be away for an extended period. Please send a note to school outlining the nature of the absence and expected date of return. For absences that exceed 15 school days, an exemption from attendance at school application needs to be completed. This application form is available from the office.

 Partial Absences:

Partial absences must be recorded for children who are not at school by 9.25am or who leave before 3.25pm. Any student arriving late to school must report to the office for a Late Arrivals slip before proceeding to class. Should a student be required to leave, or leave and return, during school hours, parents must complete an Early Departure/Late Arrivals slip at the school office prior to collecting their child/ren from (or returning them to) a classroom. No child is permitted to leave the school for any reason during school time without written permission from parents.

At the beginning of each year, Essential School forms are sent home. Please fill these in carefully and return them promptly to the office.

Please notify the school immediately if there are changes to:

 home address

home, work or mobile telephone number

child's designated emergency contact person's name or telephone number

child's custody or access arrangements. Copies of Court Orders should be provided.

Please advise the class teacher of the changes in writing. Our capacity to contact you for either educational concerns or medical emergencies is very much dependent upon the accuracy of the details you provide.
